Saxon Prince Southend-on-sea
by Draknus
Date August 24th Location The Planetarium, Victoria Avenue, Southend-on-sea
We went to the Southend Planetarium to hear a lecture on the Prittlewell Prince. There was a group of actors that dramatised the history re-enactment.
A knight at the museum.
It was very interactive where we could go outside and get involved with burial process and we were given a runestone.
It was an interesting piece of history learning that Southend-on-Sea was independent of the Roman invasion for 11 years.
We also learned that not all the Saxons were Christians and followed other religions and worshipped other gods such as the gods in Norse mythology such as Odin, Thor, Loki etc.
We also learned about Scottish ruins, sacrificial offerings, and the devaluation of currencies.
Roman Money
We learned that the romans brought coins to the UK. When Britain became a Roman province in 43 AD.
Julius Caesaer was the first Roman emperor that put his own image on his coins (previous emperors put their predecessors image on them.
These coins were used in Britain for over 300 years until we made our own coins from 600 AD in Londinium (London) and Camulodunum (Colchester) Will the US Dollar and the British pound suffer the same fate as the Roman Denarius. Look at this table below and notice how the weight of the silver Roman Denarius got lighter over time.
Year | Event | Weight | Silver Purity |
---|---|---|---|
267 BC | Predecessor | 6.81 g | ? |
211 BC | Introduction | 4.55 g | 95–98% |
200 BC | Debasement | 3.9 g | 95–98% |
Notice how in the early Roman era (100bc the coins were made of Gold. Over time the devaluation of the coins was acheived by using cheaper metals starting with Silver then to our coins today which are made of worthless Nickel & Paper.
It was fun learning the rise and fall of everything and would love to go again to learn more fascinating facts from history.
ACD just got back from America and he brought us a real one dollar note. It feels like the dollar is just paper and probably easy to counterfeit. (Editor- The banks are the only people in the world legally allowed to counterfeit money, if anyone else tried it we would go straight to jail without passing go.)
